About us.
Sorella Gelateria is a small, locally owned gelato shop located in Lexington, KY that specializes in handcrafted, small-batch Italian gelato and sorbetto. Established by two sisters, Alma Kajtazovic and Selma Sulejmanagic, this is Lexington’s first artisanal gelateria. The sisters’ love of gelato began in their early childhood, and since then, they have always wanted to combine their love of the culinary arts and business.
Real Italian Flavor.
Selma traveled to Cervignano del Friuli, in Northern Italy where she learned and perfected the art of making gelato. While Selma was in Italy, Alma worked on their business plan. She found a perfect location – an old, historic building located on North Limestone. To tie it all together, they named it Sorella, which means “sister” in Italian.
In May 2021, after almost 6 years in business, the sisters decided to purchase a small building in the historic downtown neighborhood and relocated their Gelateria to the new location (corner of Jefferson and W Short Street).
Our Philosophy
Our gelato and sorbetto are made daily from scratch using fresh and high quality ingredients hand-picked by Selma. Since we’re committed to serving fresh gelato every day, we make it on-site each morning in small batches, and only enough to sell by the end of the day. This way, we give our customers the highest quality dessert we can offer. We craft traditional Italian flavors, such as Pistachio, while catering to the local community’s taste with Bourbon flavors.
We source all our ingredients either from local farmers and vendors, or directly from Italy. We partnered with Legacy Dairy (Cave City, KY) and are able to create gelato with local dairy from a small, family owned farm. There are no artificial flavors or sweeteners used in our gelato. In addition to supporting the local economy, our Italian imported ingredients let us maintain that authentic and traditional taste.
Supporting community and giving back is an important part of Sorella’s philosophy. We support local nonprofits by donating our gelato to selected charities and community events.
